The Best Mario Kart Alternatives On Xbox And PS (7)

For the kart racing subgenre, it's difficult for any game to come close to Mario Kart. It effectively created the entire genre and somehow continues to find ways to improve. It has intricacies that make it enjoyable for seasoned racers and is inviting enough that even people who rarely play video games can enjoy it.

It's a formula many companies have tried to replicate and bring to the PlayStation and Xbox with moderate success. Often, it's a lazy attempt that barely manages to be half as fun as a Mario Kart game. Others have become worthy competitors, and even feature well-known characters to anchor the game.

Updated on September 8, 2024, by Antonio Samson: With Mario Kart 8 Deluxe being one of the best-selling games of all time, some people may be looking for an alternative to other systems. Luckily, there are plenty of great kart racers on PlayStation and Xbox that can scratch that Mario Kart itch. This article was updated to include more games and to meet CBR's editorial and formatting standards.

At this point, publisher Microids might exist entirely to cash in on the '70s and '80s nostalgia. That's the only reason a game like Smurfs Kart, where everyone's racing to become the fastest Smurf in town, would ever exist. Players get access to a dozen Smurfs and a dozen courses from the Smurfs universe, which is almost enough content to avoid asking how the Smurfs even have cars. The playful design of the tracks, inspired by the beloved Smurfs world, adds an extra layer of charm to the game, drawing in both kids and adults who fondly remember the iconic blue characters.

Still, at the heart of it, Smurfs Kart does exactly what kart racing fans want: provide wholesome racing fun accessible to all ages. There's plenty of variety and even bonuses to unlock to keep players coming back for more. The controls are simple yet responsive, making it a great entry point for younger players while also providing enough challenge for more experienced racers. The game’s bright and colorful art style stays true to the Smurfs' aesthetic, offering a delightful visual experience for players of all ages.

17 Garfield Kart: Furious Racing Was A Big Step Up From The Original

Improved Content and Customization Add Depth to a Nostalgic Kart Racer

Garfield Kart: Furious Racing is a noticeable step up from the original. There's more content to this game than most people would assume. With eight characters and sixteen circuits to choose from that all pull from Garfield history, there's already plenty of variety available for a $30 game. The charm of the Garfield franchise shines through in each race, with tracks and character designs that capture the humor and whimsy of the classic comic strips.

Developer Artefacts Studio takes things further by offering tons of customization for the game, meaning players can spend hours perfecting their vehicle. Customization in this game is more than just cosmetic — it impacts how players perform on the tracks, adding another layer of strategy. Most surprising is the game has both an eight-player online and four-player split-screen co-op. That extra bit of classic nostalgia bait is exactly what the average Garfield fan is looking for. Whether playing solo or with friends, the game manages to deliver a fun and competitive kart racing experience for fans of all ages.

For most of its existence, Sonic Racing was a by-the-numbers clone of Mario Kart. It was fun, but it didn't innovate much and only tried to be an alternative for players who didn't have a Nintendo. That all changed with Team Sonic Racing, which helped combine the core game with a team aspect used in Sonic Heroes. This team element brought a new level of strategy to the genre, as players have to work together, share power-ups, and assist teammates to maximize their chances of victory.

14 Nickelodeon Kart Racers Laid The Foundation For Better Sequels

Nostalgic Characters Set the Stage for Future Improvements

The Best Mario Kart Alternatives On Xbox And PS (30)

Metacritic/OpenCritic Scores:

Suppose players wanted to see who would win in a race between Reptar and SpongeBob or who among the Ninja Turtles is the fastest racer. In that case, Nickelodeon Kart Racers helps make that possible, bringing those three popular Nickelodeon franchises into a kart racing game. The game allowed fans to finally live out their childhood dreams of seeing beloved characters race against each other in a fun and lighthearted competition.

While the names are significant, the actual gameplay leaves much to be desired. The game struggled with poor controls, simplistic track designs, and lackluster presentation. To make it worse, Nickelodeon doesn't even come close to using enough of their franchises, leaving out Invader Zim, among others. However, Nickelodeon Kart Racers isn't a terrible option if players don't have a Nintendo platform and prefer a kart racer with familiar characters. It ultimately served as a stepping stone for future games in the series to improve upon, which they did, making the franchise much stronger over time.

Developed by Bamtang Games, Nickelodeon Kart Racers is a local multiplayer racing game suitable for every age. The game allows you to choose from the famous Nickelodeon characters as the cart racers. The racing tracts are also themed after the cartoon characters.

Nickelodeon Kart Racers is easy to play. At the start of the game, there is a guide on how to play, although, there is a control button to bypass that part if it is not your first time playing. Thus, kids between 8-10 years can comfortably play this game with little assistance.

You can make use of the co-op mode where friends can gang against a common enemy. Also, you can customize the carts by changing their colors and tires or installing a new engine and exhaust pipe depending on how you want it to perform.

There is plenty of game modes you can enjoy from Nickelodeon Kart Racers. The game is a series of eight cups each containing four races. There are also about 42 several free races, challenges, time trials, and boss races.

The time trial race, for instance, is a pacemaker that allows you to gauge the carts racing prowess by racing against ghost racers setting new records. The challenges have varying levels of difficulty but once completed successfully, you derive much satisfaction from this game.

Just like any other race, you have the chance to choose crew members. You can select a crew engineer and a mechanic for extra powers like invisibility, giving you an upper hand over your opponents.

13 F1 Race Stars Is A Fun Arcade Take On Formula 1

Arcade-Style Racing Makes Formula 1 Accessible and Enjoyable

The Best Mario Kart Alternatives On Xbox And PS (34)

Metacritic Score:

61/100 (MC, PS3), 64/100 (MC, X360), 62/100 (MC, PC), and 61/100 (MC, Wii U)

# of Race Tracks:

11 + 4 DLC

F1 Race Stars tries to make a more arcade-style game with the teams and racers from the 2012 Formula One season. In many ways, it was much like NBA Jam or NFL Blitz, two games that tried to appeal to a different fan base than their standard simulations. This lighthearted approach to a traditionally serious racing genre helped the game appeal to casual players and younger audiences who might be intimidated by the complexities of a full-on simulation.

The results weren't half bad, either. F1 Race Stars is pretty fun and delivers on the arcade format, but it lacks some of the wackiness that makes other kart racers so fun — which is an expected tradeoff given the license. The focus on real-world teams and racers, while unique for a kart racer, meant the game leaned more into competitive racing than playful mayhem. Still, the brightly colored tracks and exaggerated vehicle designs gave the game a distinctive look that set it apart from other Formula 1 titles. If you're a fan of F1 but also love arcade racing, F1 Race Stars offers a unique and enjoyable experience.

12 Cars 3: Driven To Win Is One Of The Rare Good Games Based On A Movie

Family-Friendly Fun Captures the Spirit of the Film Franchise

The Best Mario Kart Alternatives On Xbox And PS (35)

Metacritic/OpenCritic Scores:

Cars 3: Driven To Win was the perfect game for families to play with their kids. Cars was wildly popular, giving the game an instant connection with children. The game’s charm lies in its ability to recreate the excitement and humor of the Cars films while offering a genuinely fun racing experience for all ages. The controls kept things interesting, making it more than playable for adults.

It took a while to unlock characters in Cars 3: Driven To Win, which was likely a boon, giving kids more reason to keep playing it. The variety of modes, from standard races to stunt challenges and battle modes, kept the gameplay from getting repetitive. It may not have reinvented the wheel, but it was a fun game that was better than most movie tie-ins are. Some might even say it was better than the movie it is based on. For a movie tie-in, this was a rare gem that managed to capture the essence of the franchise while delivering solid gameplay.

11 LEGO Racers Was One Of Mario Kart's First True Competition

Innovative Build Mode Adds Personalization to Kart Racing

GameRankings Score:

75% (PC), 66% (N64), 63% (PS1)

# of Race Tracks:

LEGO Racers came out at the tail end of the '90s and presented some of the first real competition for Mario Kart in the kart racing genre. The game's unique feature was its build mode, where players could create their own custom LEGO vehicles piece by piece, making for a highly personalized racing experience. They made a valiant attempt on the PlayStation with its fun build mode. However, the game ended up only a notch below its competitor.

What held it back was the ungodly load times and the frame rate spikes. Spikes in frame rate are bad in any game, but it's even worse in a racer where that stutter can be the difference between first and second place. No one wants a race decided like that. It would be nice to see LEGO Racers get a remaster that fixes some of its technical issues so more people can experience this overlooked title. Despite its flaws, LEGO Racers laid the groundwork for future LEGO games to build upon and remains a nostalgic favorite for many players.

Jak X: Combat Racing went under the radar with many fans. Even those who loved Jak & Daxter are slightly surprised by its existence. It is such a departure from the other, better, Naughty Dog games that it felt like it came out of nowhere. However, the game’s bold shift into vehicular combat was a refreshing change of pace for fans of the series, offering something different from the traditional platforming the franchise was known for. Even more surprising is how it became one of the best racers on the PlayStation 2.

9 Building Tracks Was A Lot Of Fun In ModNation Racers

Unmatched Customization and Creativity for Kart Racing Enthusiasts

The Best Mario Kart Alternatives On Xbox And PS (38)

# of Race Tracks:

The term "underrated" gets thrown around a lot with games or movies, but rarely is there an entity more deserving of it than ModNation Racers. ModNation Racers stood out in the crowded kart racing genre because of its unprecedented level of customization and creativity. It's a game that few even remember or knew about when it was first released. The game's user-generated content kept it alive long after release, as players could download and share tracks with the community.

Made by United Front Games, it combined the creativity of LittleBigPlanet with the kart racing of Mario Kart two years before LittleBigPlanet Karting came out. The ability to design not just karts but entire racetracks gave players an almost limitless playground for their imaginations. If players could dream it up, it could become a reality in ModNation Racers. However, its big downfall was long load times. These extended load times often broke the immersion, but the game’s creative freedom more than made up for this inconvenience. ModNation Racers was ambitious for its time, and hopefully, it someday gets a second chance with a sequel.

LittleBigPlanet is one of the most beloved games on the PlayStation 3, and for good reason. It was Mario Maker before Mario Maker was a thing, a game that gave players infinite possibilities to be as creative as they desired. Taking the essence of creativity from the LittleBigPlanet series and blending it with kart racing was a brilliant move, ensuring that the game had both fun gameplay and a deep level of customization.

Imagine a game like that getting mashed together with a kart racing game. The result is LittleBigPlanet Karting, which gave players the best of both worlds — they could create to their heart's content and race. The charming and quirky art style from the original series was perfectly integrated into the kart racing experience, making the game feel like a natural extension of the LittleBigPlanet universe. It's one of the few non-Mario Kart games that was truly great. The ability to share user-generated tracks online expanded the game's replayability significantly. If only Mario Kart would feature a track creation tool.

7 Blur Was Like A Need For Speed Game If It Had Kart-Racing Elements

Realistic Racing Meets Arcade-Style Power-Ups for Thrilling Races

The Best Mario Kart Alternatives On Xbox And PS (41)

Metacritic Score:

81/100 (MC, PS3), 82/100 (MC, X360), and 81/100 (MC, PC)

Blur answers what would happen if Need For Speed and Mario Kart were mashed up into one game. This fusion of realistic cars and intense arcade-style gameplay made Blur stand out in a sea of kart racers. Blur combined the street racing elements and cars of Need for Speed and transported them into a more arcade setting.

Blur had power-ups galore, from missiles to massive speed boosts. These power-ups were cleverly integrated into the racing mechanics, offering both offense and defense strategies that added depth to the experience. It made for a wildly entertaining game that was real enough for fans who disliked the childish look of Mario Kart and arcade-like, so fans of Mario Kart would feel right at home. The game's multiplayer modes, including a robust online mode, kept players hooked for hours, providing endless fun whether you were racing solo or with friends.

6 Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing Provided Sonic With Another Means To Challenge Mario

Diverse Sega Characters and Vibrant Tracks Offer Nostalgic Fun

Metacritic Scores:

77/100 (MC, PS3), 75/100 (MC, X360), 64/100 (MC, Wii), 78/100 (MC, DS), 65/100 (MC, PC), and 89/100 (MC, iOS)

Sonic and Mario have teamed up over the years. But since the Blue Blur never got an invitation to the Mario Kart circuit, Sega developed a new take on the subgenre. Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing saw the iconic hedgehog settle into a car rather than run on his feet. This allowed for a more traditional kart racing experience, though it still retained Sonic's signature speed. Sonic was joined by fellow characters Knuckles, Tails, and Eggman, along with a handful of other characters, like Samba from Samba De Amigo, Beat from Jet Set Radio, Ai-Ai from Super Monkey Ball, and others.

The inclusion of characters from across Sega’s vast catalog was a brilliant way to appeal to long-time Sega fans, offering a nostalgic trip down memory lane. The tracks were fun and vibrant, each one inspired by different Sega franchises, which kept the gameplay fresh and exciting. The mix of characters from Sega franchises was a great trip for fans of those games, and the addition of special moves for each character made races even more dynamic.
