2002’s The Pianist stars Adrien Brody and is arguably one of both the best and most underrated movies depicting the suffering the Jewish community endured during the Holocaust ever made. Directed by Roman Polanski, Brody portrays real life Polish-Jewish pianist and classical composer Władysław Szpilman living in Poland during the Nazi invasion and occupation. The biographical drama then follows Szpilman and his family as they are forced from their home and into the Warsaw Ghetto. Szpilman’s family are eventually taken to the Treblinka extermination camp but Władysław is spared, much to his distress.

Now alone and a fugitive, Szpilman witnesses many key moments throughout the Nazi occupation, including the Warsaw Uprising and, eventually, the Soviet offensive that liberated Poland. The Pianist is truly one of the most difficult drama movies on Prime Video to get through, but that’s simply because its portrayal of some of the worst events in human history is so masterfully accurate — with Brody’s performance, for which he won an Academy Award, impeccable throughout.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves‘ cast are clearly having a great time, and that spreads to the viewer. It also helps that, in one particular Chris Pine moment, it has arguably the funniest scene of any 2023 movie. Honor Among Thieves may have bombed at the box office, and it’s by no means perfect, but it’s ideal movie night entertainment on Amazon Prime.

It’s shocking that Christopher Nolan hasn’t won an Oscar. Although Oppenheimer may see this change, he would have been deserving with almost any other movie in his filmography, including Interstellar. A word commonly associated with Nolan movies is “mind-bending”, and his epic space drama is no exception. Typical of a Nolan movie, Interstellar is stacked with an A-list ensemble including Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, and Matt Damon.

McConaughey leads the movie as a former NASA pilot on a mission in space to find a habitable planet as Earth is dying. While Nolan himself received no Oscar nominations for Interstellar, the film deservedly won for Best Visual Effects, and this combined with the thought-provoking storyline makes this one of the best movies on Amazon Prime Video.

Interstellar won 12 awards from its 28 nominations, including an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in 2015.

The movie details key events in Pearl’s life in 1918 that saw her become the bloodthirsty killer seen in X, driven in part by repressed attitudes toward female sexuality in the era.

Pearl stands as both a social commentary, period drama, and horror movie, and is sure to keep Prime Video subscribers captivated throughout. As well as Goth’s performance and Ti West’s directorial flair, Pearl includes some incredible practical effects, and has been praised by the likes of filmmaker Martin Scorsese. The movie sits at a solid 93% on Rotten Tomatoes — a noteworthy feat for a horror film.

Both Hoult and Cage deliver hilarious performances, and while it may not be among the best movies in either star’s filmography, placing them onscreen together makes Renfield a movie that deserved far more attention than it received theatrically.

The Exorcist: Believer ups the ante from the original movie by including two possessions. Two young friends, Angela and Katherine, attempt a seance to speak to Angela’s dead mother. The pair go missing and, when they’re eventually found, it’s clear that they made contact with something else entirely.

What follows is a nailbiting exorcism movie that ends with Angela’s father, the widower Victor (Leslie Odom Jr.) having to make a harrowing choice. While it doesn’t quite live up to the original, The Exorcist: Believer still stands out among modern supernatural horror movies, thanks both to some incredible special effects, David Gordon Green’s directoral flare, and the performances of young actresses Lidya Jewett and Olivia O’Neill as Angela and Katherine.

Laura then takes her own life in front of Rose, who begins to experience the same disturbing phenomena.

The best horror movies always have smart social commentary, and beneath its many jump scares and terrifying smiles, Smile has a lot to say about trauma, and it’s delivered through some stellar performances, led by Bacon is no doubt on her way to becoming an A-list actor.

In the movie on Amazon Prime Video, Gyllenhaal stars as Green Beret John Kinley who, after returning home from the War in Afghanistan, learns that his interpreter and trusted ally back on the front, Ahmed (Salim), has been forced into hiding.

Ritchie proves his versatility as a director in The Covenant, as none of his trademark tongue-in-cheek humor is present. Instead, he, Gyllenhaal, and Salim deliver an emotionally intense film that shines a light on the aftermath of its central conflict, and it’s almost guaranteed to leave viewers as introspective as they are entertained. The cast shines throughout, and Amazon Prime Video subscribers should also keep an eye out for The Boys cast member Anthony Starr.

2024’s Road House is a direct-to-streaming remake of the 1989 cult classic starring Patrick Swayze of the same name, and is an Amazon Prime Video exclusive. The new version of Road House stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Dalton, a cage fighter formerly with the UFC who now earns his keep as a bouncer at the roughest club in Florida Keys, The Road House. This relatively simple premise of course leads to plenty of drama and hardship, with the incredibly troubled Dalton having to face his personal demons as well as the various troublemakers he has to (often violently) eject from the venue.

Gyllenhaal is joined in the Road House cast by Portuguese telenovela star Daniela Melchior and, interestingly, real-life MMA fighter Colin McGregor as the movie’s antagonist, Knox. While not the most cerebral movie in character actor Jake Gyllenhaal’s filmography, 2024’s Road House manage to capture the essence of what made the 1989 original a cult classic, making it a slick-yet-easy watch for Prime Video subscribers.

Throw in Danny DeVito as The Penguin, Michell Pfeiffer as Catwoman, and the juxtaposition of a Christmas setting, and Batman Returns is inarguably one of the greatest superhero movies ever made.

While Batman Returns doesn’t have the same gritty feel as Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy or 2022’s The Batman, it stands out as the best of the pre-Batman Begins movies to feature the Caped Crusader. It can veer into campiness at points, but doesn’t suffer for it, and its flaws (such as Michael Keaton being able to turn his neck while in costume) have only served to give it its own identity. The entire cast gives a performance that is just exaggerated enough to suit the tone without being over-the-top, making Batman Returns a truly unique viewing experience.

While Sicario‘s action sequences are thrilling, it’s Sheridan’s nuanced characters and the stellar actors bringing them to the screen that makes the film such an intense, fascinating watch. and easily among the best action movies on Amazon Prime Video.

Released over 30 years after the original, the sequel was well worth the wait, as Maverick is even better than Top Gun. As Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell trains the next generation of Top Gun graduates, Maverick has better visuals, a tighter script, and sends the franchise soaring into the 21st century with a totally modern update of this beloved story.
