My grandad took the fact he’d been in the first waves of D-Day troops to the grave. He had never discussed it with my dad, uncle or my four aunts or to my knowledge, anyone. As a family we knew he had fought with the Highland Light Infantry in tanks through North Africa, Sicily and Italy, but he never mentioned France. I only worked it out from his “red book” when I saw 6 June 1944, Western Europe. He was 23 years old when he landed on those beaches.Like a lot of his generation he had done his service, he came back, he wanted to get on with his life. We have no idea what happened or what his role was, but what we do know is that 29 days later, Normandy finished his military career. He was badly shot up and back in England. After grandad recovered from his wounds, he married grandma who was a Women’s Auxiliary Air Force service woman,, who he had met on the south coast before setting sail to Normandy. They settled back in Yorkshire and was a surface worker at the pits, he died in 1985 aged 67. They had six kids had they lived would have seen six grandkids and nine great grandchildren. When he died in 1985, dad identified his body and saw blue “tattoo” stripes across his body, burnt in by cordite from machine gun bullets which would have killed him if they were 1cm deeper. He had volunteered to serve with the HLI in 1939 after his elder brother, George, who dad was named after, was killed in a roof collapse in a coal mine in West Yorkshire. After the war I was told he would attend Remembrance Day events but it was said he wouldn’t wear his medals. He said that men had died in the pits digging coal for the steel mills in Sheffield and never received any recognition. We have his generation to thank for the freedoms we enjoy today.Matt Baird Royal British Legion RHQ Royal Regiment of Scotland #DDay #Scotland #Yorkshire #army #military #service #UK #France

So proud of James Baird - I have waved him goodbye on January 6 from Luton Airport to complete his film production studies at The American University of ParisOrganised by the Study Abroad Team from University of East Anglia this little clip indicates he may want expand his horizons even more. Despite living with #type1diabetes he successfully completed all his studies, made some great friends and contacts, interrailed across Europe, staying with an old school friend of mine in Utrecht, onto Amsterdam and saw the places I studied overseas, before going on to Berlin & Cologne. He also managed to gain accreditation to the Cannes Film Festival thanks to our connections with John Currie who runs the Beeston Film Festival which celebrated its 10th anniversary this year. He also discovered that in the whole of Paris there is not a single barber and no Frenchman ever gets their haircut or beard trimmed, ever....He's really looking forward to his final year at UEA. I already know that living and studying overseas has done what it did to me - fuelled his desire to live in and see more of the world; make sure he works hard, plays hard and to use the words of my good friend Rob Wofinden "maximise""Wherever you go becomes a part of you somehow." - Anita Desai#travel #study #work #life #Paris #France #student
