How to cure Diseases of the Heart with Quran - The Muslim Life Coach Institute for mastering your Mind, Actions and results. (2024)

One of the widespread problems that we suffer from as Muslims is bad intentions, malice, and jealousy towards others. Allah teaches us the key to the happiness of the heart and soul is through purifying the heart of these diseases.

It’s only human nature that we want what we don’t have because that’s the way we’ve been created. So how do you cure the diseases of the heart with the Quran? The route of all malice, jealousy, and evil in the heart begins with ingratitude. To purify the heart and soul of these negative emotions is of the highest importance in Islam. Allah says in Surah Al Baqarah, verse 10:

فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ فَزَادَهُمُ اللَّـهُ مَرَضًا ۖ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ بِمَا كَانُوا يَكْذِبُونَ

In their hearts is disease, so Allah increases them in that disease. And for them, there is a painful punishment because they used to lie / Reject.

This verse deals directly with the root of the problem, which is the heart. The heart is the central control point in the human body. The mind is where all the planning and the analytical thinking goes on, however, the heart is where the motivation and energy come from. So, in this verse, Allah goes right to the root of the problem when talking about the hypocrites at the time of revelation who were pretending to be Muslim, yet within them, they harbored malice and hatred for the Muslims and the religion of Allah.

In this verse, Allah says that their hearts are filled with the disease and because of their own actions Allah increases them in that disease, for which the consequence will be a painful punishment in the hereafter.

Page 4, verse 10- How to purify the Heart for success.

The spiritual sickness of the heart is like any type of disease when it infects a person’s body, if left untreated, it will spread until it dominates the body.

For this Allah highlights the importance of purifying the heart and staying away from the signs of hypocrisy in Islam. Hypocrisy in Islam is when the heart becomes filled with malice and hatred and rejection, and darkness, whilst at the same time displaying the characteristics of a believer on the outside.

The lesson is what’s on the inside matters more than what is displayed on the outside.

There’s a famous Hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who taught us a Dua through his Sunnah where he says:

ما رواه أنس -رضي الله عنه- قال: كان النبي -صلى الله عليه وسلم- يكثر أن يقول: يا مقلب القلوب ثبت قلبي على دينك

Oh Turner of the hearts, establish my heart upon your Dean.

This Dua has such importance as a supplication because it teaches us the central focus is the heart. It’s not enough for us to take action to purify the heart. Rather, we should be asking Allah to help us to fixate our hearts upon faith and belief in Him.

If the heart is filled with good then the body will produce good, and if the heart is filled with bad then the body will produce bad. We are a direct result of what is inside, so if we have within us, things that contradict the state of a good Muslim, then we need to work to purify ourselves from this.

We know from the last class that the Muslim of the highest level, the Mutaqeen should be people who believe in the unseen, establish the prayers and they are a Giving people. If you find that your miserly then, this contradicts the characteristics of the giver.

So then you have to focus in on that and develop that skill by repeatedly giving from yourself. If you have doubt in your faith, then you have to seek knowledge to eliminate that doubt, because knowledge is the light that wipes away all doubts.

And most importantly if you are not praying your 5 daily prayers and fulfilling the basic obligations of a Muslim, then you need to work on this to improve on this and become the very person, that Allah created you to be.

The solution to this diseased heart is to fill your heart with gratitude by recognising and thanking Allah for all of the blessings in your life.

Go right down to the very basic fundamental blessings in your life, such as sight, and taste, and hearing, and feeling, and security and all of the other blessings that you have in your life.

When you spend most of your time looking at others who have what you don’t have, then automatically, you will become envious of those people. And if you water the seeds of envy with constant gazing at their lives and what they have, then you will be filled with envy until it overtakes your heart like a disease.

So, to cure this you have to train yourself to be grateful for all of the blessings that you have that someone else doesn’t have. If you can train yourself to be grateful all of the time, then slowly you will get rid of that envy and jealousy and maybe even the malice that has set into the heart.

Don’t be despair if you have aspects of negative characteristics within you, because we are all human and Allah knew that we would fall into these shortcomings and this is why he the Most Compassionate, has revealed these verses to teach us how to mould our minds and hearts until we become the very best of creation.

Life is a journey for growth and change. You’re not an end product now, but you are on the journey towards that insha’Allah.

So take the steps and insha’Allah you will get there with great glory and success. I’m counting on you ? Let’s do this.
