Does Grubhub Take Cash? Cash Policy Explained (2024)

  • Grubhub allows cash payments at select restaurants that accept this option.
  • Use the “accepts cash” filter on Grubhub to find restaurants that accept cash.
  • To pay with cash, select the “Cash” option during checkout if available.
  • If cash is not accepted, alternative payment methods like PayPal and Apple Pay can be used.

I’ve recently gotten quite a few inquiries into whether or not Grubhub accepts cash. Luckily, they are one service that does, but there are conditions to the policy to keep in mind.

Below, I’ll show you how cash payments work on Grubhub, how to use them, and what to keep in mind while doing so.

Does Grubhub Accept Cash?

Yes, Grubhub does allow customers to pay with cash, but it depends on the restaurant.

Not all restaurants on Grubhub accept cash payments – it is up to the restaurant to decide whether or not they’re willing to do so.

If a restaurant does accept cash, you can select it as a payment option while checking out on the app.

If they don’t accept cash, you’ll need to use another form of payment such as PayPal, Apple Pay, eGift, and Android Pay.

Another workaround that I’ve found is to use Grubhub’s pickup feature, which can sometimes allow customers to pay with cash in person when they pick up the food from the restaurant.

My Thoughts

As a general rule of thumb, most restaurants on Grubhub don’t take cash. Figuring out which restaurants accept it is a frustrating, time-consuming process, so I suggest just paying for a card instead.

Unforunately, there’s no easy way to find restaurants that accept cash other than adding items to your cart and then seeing what various payment methods that restaurant offers.

Based on the initial research that I did while writing this post, some popular restaurants that accept cash include:

  • Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen
  • Moe’s Southwest Grill
  • Five Guys
  • Burger King
  • Pizza Hut
  • Chopt
  • Applebee’s Boston Market
  • Chick-fil-A
  • Wendy’s
  • Taco Bell
  • KFC
  • Sonic
  • McDonald’s
  • Chipotle
  • Jack in the Box
  • Dominos
  • Jimmy John’s

But again, different locations have different payment methods, so just because cash is accepted at one location doesn’t meant that is is accepted at another.

I wish there was a “cash on delivery” filter that you could use to select places that take cash, but as far as I can tell, there’s nothing like this on the app or website.

How to Pay with Cash on Grubhub

If you’re able to find a restaurant on Grubhub that accepts cash, it is pretty easy to pay using that form of payment.

It works a bit differently than paying with a card though and requires a few more steps than you’re probably used to.

  • Open Grubhub: You can use the Grubhub app on your mobile device or visit Grubhub.com on your computer.
  • Select Delivery or Pickup: Tap the “Delivery” or “Pickup” option at the top of the screen to filter the restaurants accordingly.
  • Find Your Restaurant: Scroll through the list of restaurants to find the one you want to order from. Select the restaurant to view its menu.
  • Add Items to Your Bag: Choose your desired food items from the menu and tap “Add to Bag.”
  • Proceed to Checkout: Once you’ve added all the items you want, tap “View order” and then “Proceed to Checkout.”
  • Verify Contact Information: Make sure your contact information, including your name and phone number, is correct.
  • Enter Delivery Address: If you’re ordering for delivery, you’ll need to enter your delivery address.
  • Review Your Order: Tap “Review order” to see all the details of your order, including delivery or pickup instructions.
  • Select Payment Method: Tap the arrow next to “Your Payment” to open the payment options. If the restaurant accepts cash, you will see a “Cash” option.
  • Place Your Order: Select “Cash” as your payment method and then tap “Place Your Order.”

When your driver arrives, you’ll need to pay them with the cash for your order. I suggest also including a good tip because cash is difficult to deal with as a driver.

You should also have the exact cash required for your order. Most drivers don’t carry cash (it’s inconvenient and also a bit of a security issue) so expecting change back isn’t fair to the driver.

A little bit of prep work on your end will save the driver a huge amount of time and headache when they get there.
