Bittersweet moment woman watches granddaughter thrive in hospital job (2024)

This is the bittersweet moment a grandmother proudly watches her granddaughter thrive in her hospital role after the 90-year-old was rushed there for treatment following a fall at home.

Sadly, less than a month after seeing first-hand her loved one succeed in her job,Hazel Shaw, from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, passed away.

Her emotional story features on tonight's episode of Casualty 24/7 on Channel 5, where the doting grandmother is seen beingrushed into hospital after having a fall at her home nearby.

Though she's clearly in a lot of pain as she's filmed, when she reaches Barnsley hospital, Hazel's mood quickly changes upon the arrival of her granddaughter, Jess, who works there and rushes to help.

Once Hazel is set up in a hospital bed with painkillers, Jess is seen holding her nan's hand on the A&E ward and during the tender moment, the medical expertreassures her grandmother before trying to get to the bottom of the incident.

Jess, who is a trainee clinical advanced practitioner at Barnsley hospital, sends her nan for an X-Ray to establish the severity of her injuries.

Making sure she receives only the best care possible, Jess sneaks a look at the results which show the accident is a result of 'wear and tear' on her grandmother's hip.

The strain has then caused her bone to crumble, making the grandmother unstable and prone to such falls.

‘Actually seeing it on a black and white screen really brought home how tough she actually was really was,' says the practitioner when she realises what pain her grandmother must have been in.

Since losing her husband, Hazel had avoided hospitals at all costs and struggled to show the pain she was sometimes in.

‘Since losing my granddad last year she absolutely did not want to be in hospital for love nor money,' explains Jess.

‘My nan is quite a stoic lady. That older generation are and they kind of just take things in their stride and just deal with it. I don't think I've ever seen my nan cry’ adds Jess.

Although Hazel would do anything to avoid being in a hospital, one silver lining was the chance she had to proudly watch her granddaughter working on the ward.

‘She knew I was a nurse but most of this was new to her. I think that's when it kind of hit me that my nanna was proud of me of and where I've got to,' Jess says.

Jess, who is now 31, has worked her way through the ranks since starting her first job at the hospital when she was just 18 as a health care advisor.

In an uplifting scene, Jess explains that she has worn 'all the colours' of scrubs having worked her way up totrainee clinical advanced practitioner which is equivalent to junior doctor.

'For me, I'm set, I'm 31, I'm doing the job I've always wanted to do’ she says proudly on camera.

Though Hazel's injuries weren't serious enough to need surgery, she was treated for injuries and sores on her leg before she joined another ward to keep an eye on her.

When she finally got home to be taken care of by family, she sadly took a turn for the worst.

'Got her home and for the first week she really rallied, we thought she'd picked up. And then from then on, had a quick deterioration.'

Less than a month after her visit to hospital, the 90-year-old grandmother sadly passed away.

After her death, like everyone else who works in the care industry, Jess was straight back to work. Looking after other people is clearly very important to her.

Jess says on tonight's episode: ‘You’ve got a job to do, no matter how much it's affected you.

'Every so often I go past cubicle four and think, she was in there, as daft as that sounds.

'If you cut that part of you off too often, you’re not in the right job because you need those emotions and experiences and memories to look after people better. You are human and that’s what your patients need from you.'
