"And we'd get calls throughout the night, You didn't pick up our You need to make an extra pickup' or 'We'll be on vacation next Whitaker recalled the dogs that would greet him as he pulled his truck into driveways. Some were friendly while others were overprotective of the garbage he tried to remove from the premises. Whitaker remembered a particular German shepherd's teeth cutting into his boot as the dog's master assured the animal wouldn't bite.

Then there was a faithful friend on the Royal Pines route that showed up at every stop in advance of the truck hoping for a hot dog or some other tasty scrap. The Whitakers, married 47 years, became involved in the waste collection business by accident. Whitaker had just retired from 20 plus years of service in the Air Force where he served as an air traffic controller. Although he really liked being in the service, he said he made the decision to quit when he was assigned a second tour of duty in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. The Whitakers, who are natives of Candler, returned home to Buncombe County.

They bought Skyland Sanitary a year later and learned the business from the bottom up. "In the beginning, it was just me in a truck and Josephine in the office," Whitaker said. "We knew all of our customers. We still know many of them." But, overall, Whitaker said the refuse collection business has become more impersonal over the years, especially since the pickups have moved from the driveway 1 to curbside. "It was more fun when we could talk 1 to people we serviced," he said.

"We used to carry in Christmas trees for our customers and then carry them out to be disposed of a few weeks later. We used to walk into customers' kitchens and help carry the garbage outside. "Back then, we really provided a service," Whitaker said. "Now, it has become more of a business."
